Origins
Established in 1917, Toto's early years mirrored Japan's economic growth. In the first half of 1917, Toto produced goods to meet the demand for modern, contemporary urban housing. It used the first tunnel kiln in the nation to produce ceramics continuously. It also pioneered the use of automation to control production, allowing for greater efficiency and consistency.
In the late 1980s, the company began to expand overseas in order to benefit from sales and new markets. It created the Cera Trading Company, importing and distributing other products of manufacturers to complement its own lines of sanitary earthenware and plumbing fittings. This strategy increased sales and expanded the firm’s global market share.
In the late 1990s, Toto had shifted its emphasis to research and development of household appliances that are water-related. It also redesigned its distribution system to better serve its customers and increase profit. The company implemented a just-in-time method of managing supply chains, and it used the same method in its sales program. This led to a higher level of customer satisfaction.
Toto continues to invent on the toilet technology. The latest toilet from the company features a powerful, environmentally-friendly tornado flush. The company also uses recycled water in its production process and has a green purchasing policy. In addition to toilets Toto manufactures bathtubs and faucets and hand dryers that are more energy efficient than typical models.
The first Toto museum opened in 2015. It features exhibits on the most iconic products of Toto as well as their evolution, group companies (all of which are made of ceramics), the history of plumbing, and products such as bath units. In another gallery, visitors can view Toto products that are sold across the world. The museum has the bathroom equipped with a washbasin and other toilet innovations.
